Create Stage 3: ReflectionToday we were in process of starting their draft. Students were using their sketchbooks as a place to draw their ideas. For the past two classes, we worked on theme and basic ideas, today I wanted them to work on their final. With my volunteers, I told them to work with one child (and if there weren't enough volunteers, they were told to work with two or three). I got around and talked to every kid to give them a boost on what their final could be was. I used this class to film my session, I brought my go pro and took videos for my final video. There was nothing new that came up today, we just advanced on developing ideas for each of the kid's work.
Create Stage 2: ReflectionToday was the second day on the create stage of my project. At the beginning of the session, I started off by explaining the schedule of the day to the kids. The plan was to work on their sketches to get out their final idea, and people who already has their final idea, they had to start of their final draft. I spoke to Rodrigo at the beginning of the session and he came to class with the designs that he promised that he was going to do on photoshop for the young kids in the group. We agreed, that the kids were obviously going to have a little trouble representing their childhood in their art, since their so young. So, we thought that even if their art work did not show much connection to Peter Pan and its theme, the text was the most important. Because its going to have the little ones free write their exhibition text, we decided that the best was to create a section of the exhibition text's to be interviews for the kids. For example, some of the question can be, "Why did you choose these characters/scene?" "How does it connect with you or your personality" Bellow are some of the designs that Rodrigo created based on the idea/sketches that the kids created last class:
I also took the chance today to take pictures of all the team today for my page and for the exhibition itself. Toward the end, I sat with each student and help them generate their ideas. Almost everyone has their final art work figured out, but I helped to even add more to their idea. For example, Fiorella had an idea, and we gave her the idea to do her work in pieces, so when she can present her work, she can place them as if they were pieces to a puzzle. Our idea also helped contributed with the message of her art work as well. So far, I feel like we are all moving into the right direction and are well con schedule. I hope that by next time, people will be working on their final draft and finish by the end of next session. Here are some pictures I took of todays session: Create Stage 1: ReflectionToday was the first day of my actual create stage in my actual CAS project and I got to present my project to the whole Habla Roosevelt Kids to see if I can get more kids join. My objective was to use the play as "bait" to get more kids to join Art as their activity, luckily, I got two new kids to join. I have a total of 9 kids that are in the activity. What I did today was present the idea more in depth. I started off asking the kids if they knew about the play, and they did know about it. I presented the idea of the theme and asked for kids to just sketch for the day. We received sketchbooks from the Habla Roosevelt club and each student was given a sketchbook to be able to sketch out their ideas for their final artwork. To help out with their sketching, given that the theme is about "Never growing up", I told my class to think about any memory from their childhood, a certain scene, object, group of people or character that relates to the theme on a more personal level. I noticed that the older kids sketched more on the representation of never giving up. They went more beyond the theme and created a sketch of the idea using symbolism with objects. The little ones took their favorite character from a video game or from their favorite TV show and related it to the theme saying that these certain characters represent their childhood, meaning they basically grew up playing with these characters. Because the little ones are still very young where they haven reached their teens yet, they are still living in their childhood, so I noticed that they were mostly focusing on their present that their past like the older kids. Today was mostly on organizing myself and meeting the kids. I made a list with all the kids names and decided to do a spread sheet to take attendance each day we meet (linked bellow). Towards the end of the class, I got to speak to Rodrigo (The Habla Roosevelt Art teacher) about my project, he loved the idea and even gave me some ideas of his own. He told me, that usually what he does with the little kids is that he takes the kids sketch and ideas and uses photoshop to generate their ideas digitally. He then prints them out and so the kids have a reference of what they wanted, it helps for the young ones to create detailed and developed art pieces that could be able to be at level with other kids. We decided, that next week he would bring some developed pieces from photoshop that can help the kids to know exactly what they are doing. Overall I thought todays class as the first day of the create stage went super well. I got to meet the kids and learn a little bit about them. I liked to see the connection they had with art and how passionate they were to draw. They were generating so many ideas on what they want to do, I got super excited to help them out. Check out some of the pictures I took today: Habla Roosevelt Ignition Day: ReflectionToday was Habla Roosevelt's first day of the semester after coming back from a long break. Because it wasn't my first day in the club, there were a lot of new kids and volunteers that were very nervous showing up with the rest of the group. As I walked into the presentation, I sat down next to a little boy who was sitting all alone, all his materials were on his lap ready to go to learn. I approached him, asking him his name, age, asking if he was new and so on. We got to know each other well and turns out I helped him loosen up to feel more comfortable with others.
Meet Bruce.... A little 8 year old boy attending Habla Roosevelt for the first time. His has a bold personality once he's comfortable. As he told me, his favorite sport is running (track and field) and swimming. (I challenged him in a running contest to see who would win, he thinks he can beat anyone. He identifies himself as a lightning bolt). Starting off he was very shy, he would whisper to me, asking questions about the program or just asking things about me. Turns out, I made a friend and he did to. Bruce, surprised, told me by the end of the day, " Wow, I didn't think I would make a friend on the first day..." But I did. We ended up in the same activity, of course he wanted to do sports, but he ended up liking the fact that I was with him in his activity, so he was fine sticking with Art. I also got to meet with Habla Roosevelt's art teacher, Rodrigo. After doing the Art class with him and the kids, I approached him to talk about my CAS project that I will be doing with him. He loved the idea and gave me some tips and help on how I could improve or do my project with him. Rodrigo offered to bring materials and to even do his own art piece for the exhibition itself. For the first day, I would say it has been a successful and I feel prepared to continue my investigation to prepare for Saturday's Habla Roosevelt session. This is where I will announce my project to all the Habla kids to see if I can reach out to other kids that will be interested in participating. My goal is to be able to recruit more students for art and start with an introduction and planning for them to begin preparing for the exhibition. |
